Care of the Newborn

The role of the pediatrician is to promote and facilitate normal adaptation of the infant, to detect significant medical problems and to evaluate and treat medical problems detected in the newborn period. Routine newborn care includes: erythromycin ointment eye prophylaxis to prevent gonococcal conjunctivitis, intramuscular vitamin K to prevent hemorrhagic disease of the newborn. Some hospitals and pediatricians will administer hepatitis B vaccine at birth. The newborn screening test for genetic diseases is usually performed at 24 to 48hrs of age.
An essential part after the initial evaluation of the infant includes promoting mother-infant bonding, We recommend to begin feeding immediately after birth and nothing is better than to breast feed your infant.

Getting ready for your baby

Feeding your baby
Big day has arrived! You should have a pediatrician and his/her contact number. It is important that you choose a physician that you feel comfortable with.
Remember to bring all the different items that you may need such as (baby clothes, diaper, towels, baby moisture lotion, gentle soap, etc. The absolutely essential piece of baby gear is the car seat.
The beauty of mother’s milk is it provides a specific protection from infection because the mom is in the same environment as the baby and builds immunity that is passed along to her baby. We encourage to feed exclusively mother's milk. Breast milk is the best milk for your child and it is free! It has all the necessary nutrients to support your baby growth until 6 month of age. After 6 month of age, introduction of solid food is recommended.
Some infants may not be able to receive breast milk for different reasons. Your pediatrician will guide you to choose the right infant formula for your baby.

Bathing your baby
The recommended temperature to bath your baby is somewhere between 35-37 centigrades. In tropical weather like ours you can bath your baby at the tap water temperature. Use a gentle soap to gently clean genital area and buttocks. You can use a sponge for the rest of the body.
Never leave your baby unattended in the bath, not even for a few seconds. That could be all the time it takes for your baby to get into difficulty in the water, even when he's in a bath seat.

Immunizations
Reducing and eliminating the diseases that vaccines prevent is one of the top achievements in the history of public health. Vaccines protects your child from 14 serious childhood diseases. Most parents choose to immunize. It's the powerful defense that's safe, proven and effective.
